Common Types of Forged Hooks for Lifting & Rigging Applications
In the lifting and rigging industries, hooks are essential for moving components from one location to another. Due to their usage and the advantages of steel forging, these hooks need to be extremely strong and capable of withstanding heavy loads. Various types of hooks are designed and produced based on their specific applications. Below are some common types of forged hooks used in lifting and rigging:
Slip Hooks
Clevis Slip Hooks
Clevis slip hooks need to match the chain size and are designed for use primarily with graded chains, attaching directly to the chain. They are available in heat-treated carbon and alloy steel. The load must be applied in line with the clevis and placed firmly in the base (bowl saddle) of the hook.
Clevlok Sling Hooks
Clevlok sling hooks should be matched to the chain size and grade, designed for use primarily with Grade 80 chains. These hooks attach directly to the chain and are made from heat-treated alloy steel, often with an optional latch. The load must be applied in line with the clevis and placed firmly in the base (saddle-bowl) of the hook. Note: The latch is meant to retain items such as slings and chains under slack conditions only and is not intended to support the load.
Eye Slip Hooks
Eye slip hooks must be matched to the size and grade of the chain. They are designed primarily for use with graded chains and must be affixed to the chain with either a welded or mechanical coupling link. The load must be applied in line with the eye and placed firmly in the base (bowl saddle) of the hook.
Rigging Hooks
Rigging hooks are similar to eye slip hooks but feature an enlarged eye to accommodate larger couplers such as thimbles. These hooks are made from heat-treated carbon or alloy steels. They are general-purpose hooks available with an optional latch. The load must be applied in line with the eye and placed firmly in the base (bowl-saddle) of the hook. Note that the latch is designed to retain items like slings and chains under slack conditions and is not intended to support the load.
Grab Hooks
Conventional Grab Hooks
These hooks are designed to hook back onto the chain in a choker arrangement. The full working load limit can be achieved if the hitch angle is 30 degrees or greater. If used in other configurations, such as direct tension, the assembly’s working load limit must be derated by 25%.
Clevis Grab Hooks
Clevis grab hooks must be matched to the chain size and are designed for use primarily with graded chains, affixed directly to the chain. They are available in forged carbon steel and alloy steel, both heat-treated for durability.
Clevlok Cradle Grab Hooks
These hooks must also be matched to the chain size and are designed primarily for use with Grade 80 chains. Made from heat-treated alloy steel, they are attached directly to the chain and provide enhanced security.
Eye Grab Hooks
Eye grab hooks should match the chain size and are designed primarily for graded chains. They must be affixed to the chain using a welded coupling link or a mechanical coupling link. These hooks are manufactured from unheat-treated carbon steel and heat-treated alloy steels.
Eye Cradle Grab Hooks
Eye cradle grab hooks are specifically designed for use with Grade 80 chains. They must be affixed to the chain using a welded link or a mechanical coupling link. These forged hooks are made exclusively from heat-treated alloy steel, providing high strength and durability.
